Longbotham Endowed Scholarship established at Texas A&M

COLLEGE STATION – Dr. Jack and Elisabeth Prude Longbotham have established the College of Agriculture Development Council Jack ‘68 and Elisabeth ‘68 Longbotham Endowed Scholarship for $25,000 through the Texas A&M Foundation and the council.

This gift will provide one or more scholarships to full-time students, in good standing, pursuing a degree from the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences at Texas A&M University. Preference will be given to active members of the Texas A&M Rodeo team who exhibit mature leadership qualities and meet academic requirements.

“The Texas A&M Rodeo Team is very excited over the endowment given by Jack and Elisabeth Longbotham,” said rodeo team adviser Dr. Al Wagner. “This will help us to continue recruiting quality rodeo student athletes.”

Jack Longbotham is from Snyder. He graduated with a bachelor of science degree from Texas Tech University in 1952, a master’s degree from Sul Ross University in 1957 and a doctorate from Texas A&M in 1968. While attending Texas A&M, he was a member of the Texas A&M Rodeo Team and director for the National Intercollegiate Rodeo Association.

After 26 years of teaching, Jack Longbotham retired as a professor and dean of education at Hardin Simmons University in Abilene. He also served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War.

Elisabeth Longbotham is from Fort Davis. She graduated with a bachelor’s degree from Sul Ross University in 1955 and a master’s degree from Texas A&M in 1968. While at Sul Ross, Elisabeth was a member of the Sul Ross Rodeo Team and won the National Champion Intercollegiate Rodeo Association’s Champion Cowgirl award.

She is a retired educator from McMurry University in Abilene.

The Longbothams are both lifetime church members and ranchers. They hold memberships in the American Quarter Horse Association, Texas Hereford Association, and Texas and Southwestern Cattle Raisers Associations. They are lifetime members of the American Hereford Association.

“We believe in young people and know they are our future,” said the Longbothams. “We hope the scholarship recipients carry this resolve with them now and after graduation from Texas A&M.”
