MELVIN – The Texas AgriLife Extension Service’s McCulloch County Ag and Natural Resources Committee will conduct a feral hog workshop and meal from 5:30-8:30 p.m. Oct. 26 at Jacoby’s Café in Melvin.

Vance Christie, AgriLife Extension agent in McCulloch County, said the program is being held in conjunction with the Texas Department of Agriculture’s “Get the Hog Out Of Texas” campaign that runs through October.

“Our main goal with this program and the state-wide campaign is to increase the level of awareness among landowners concerning this fast-growing menace,” Christie said.

Christie said the workshop’s curriculum will add to information presented during a similar workshop last year.

“The program should be of great interest to landowners, producers and wildlife enthusiasts,” he said. “We’ll present a feral-hog webinar produced by Dr. Billy Higginbotham, AgriLife Extension wildlife specialist at Overton. We’ll also have local trappers and wildlife management specialists available to discuss equipment for hunting and trapping feral swine.”

Two Texas Department of Agriculture continuing education units will be available for those with a private pesticide applicators license.

Individual pre-registration is $10 by Oct. 25 and $15 thereafter and at the door. The fee includes the meal.
